About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

Thank you for another video with knowledge.

    • Sandi Schraut

Sorry bees are fascinating but for me at a distance. I love to see them in the garden however I live in town.

What happened was no ventilation or not proper ventilation. You asking him a question and he’s a student of yours. You should be explaining to him how it happened. From my point of view that type of Hive can’t get the proper ventilation.

OFF GRID with DOUG & STACY I think you should try shungite for the bees. Place 3 small stones next to the entrance.

  • Blanchard's Bees

I really enjoy when you have Dr. Leo on. He’s a hoot!🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

  • Janet Withers

That is really sad that the wax moth larvae got the hives. Gosh, heartbreaking. HOpe your bees can be recovered. Dr. Leo really knows his bees and hives.

    • Jeffrey Dustin

Same happened to me this year. identical…damn wax moths are a symptom of a weak hive. I believe the bees didn’t have great nutrition. They swarmed and then the remaining ones bought the farm.

    • 18 Bees

the point he made about swarming directly contributing was important.

  • Critical Tinker

You should have said, “A lot of y’all are new-bees.” Get it? Newbies! 🤣

  • Pinwheel Structures

The moment the lid breaks off is priceless. I’ve seen a few videos where you mentioned it should be replaced. At least this hive was not full

  • Jean Adamsick

Again, Dr Leo, is so versed in his field of bee keeping. I so enjoyed the info. given. There is much to know about, beekeeping!!!! Sad to see that the one hive didn’t make it!!! Doug, perhaps, you’ll tell us or show us, what you did w/all those larvas & beatles. It seemed that the bees, that swarmed & gathered & put into that box, didn’t like it either. Perhaps moving it to another location, to start anew? Well thanks for the video! I was going to comment about, you Daug, in this video w/out your beekeeper, jacket & netted hoody on. Do take care & BEE careful.

  • Critical Tinker

Dr. Leo’s voice is very “comb-ing.”

  • Sandi Schraut

It’s terrific to have such a great resource.

  • Ben Butcher

Would love to see Dr. Leo come back later in Sept or early Oct and talk about what to look for when harvesting. I own one of his hives, and am following along with your videos to learn as I go! Thanks

  • Chantal Tanchel

If you had noticed it swarming and had looked in and seen beetles and moths, would there have been anything you could have done to save the hive before the rest of the bees left?

    • Queen Bee

Chantal Tanchel yes, reduce the space: take frames away and reduce the hive space so the remaining bees can protect their space. Many keepers put frames in their freezer. Remove frames with capped honey or empty frames, and leave brood frames.

  • AdamsVids

Does no one notice that the sound only comes to the left speaker, i checked my headphones and I think his microphone is messed up or maybe something in the editing.

  • Michael Price

I have only been watching for about a month now, but I went back and watched all the videos with Dr. Leo. I even bought a Layens Swarm/ Starter hive for a friend from his site and made sure to add on the $5 donation.

I had something similar happen to me last year. Using Langstroth hives I lost 4 out of 5 hives. The wax moths moved in and destroyed them even though they had been strong hives before the wax moths invaded. After speaking with many bee keepers in the area we suspect 3 different issues caused it. 1 – Varroa mites weakened them. 2 – End of summer, very hot and not a lot of resources. 3 – Now with a weakened hive the wax moths moved in and destroyed the comb. The bees where overcome with the moths and they couldn’t overcome them.

This year I moved the bees out from under the shade trees and are now in full sun. Shade seems to encourage wax moths at least in our area. I setup 3 large bug zappers which do a great job of reducing bugs and moths in the area. Lastly, I’m testing and treating Varroa mites. So far, this is working well this year and bees look great.

A rhubarb and honey poutice has solved my mite problem

    • Fishman Fairclough

You can use a robbing screen that is useful for stopping wax moths.

    • Random DIY

@Fishman Fairclough That is a great point. In my case, I didn’t notice until the hives where already invaded by the months.

    • Fishman Fairclough

@Random DIY They are really useful and I do see moths on them but they struggle to find their way in, they prevent wasps and of course robber bees. You just have to remove them for the swarming season so not to prevent a returning queen from struggling to get back. As for SHB we don’t have them here so I don’t know if they are effective against them.

Dr Leo, is Amazing! He is so calm and intelligent! He has Bee Smarts for sure! I’m just totally impressed and now, I want to start with a new special God given job of Bee keeping! I’ve always been amazed at how bees know what to do or what other bees know to do which job. Now I know! Thank you Doug and I’m going to sub Dr Leo’s channel to learn more and see his piece of Heaven on earth! God is Amazing! Who else would know about bees n bee keeping better but our heavenly Father, our creator! Next Spring, I’m thinking about trying to start! I’ve been watching bee channels for awhile now but Dr Leo actually made my mind up! Thank you Doug for this heavenly video and I’m so sorry about the loss of your hive! Darn Wax Moths! Theres been others I watch that lost theirs to moths also this year! Actually several have! The Year of the Wax Moths! Grrr…Thank you Dr Leo for your God given knowledge of Honey Bees! Thank you most of all Heavenly Father for creating Honey bees for us as a healing, our health and just plain natural sweet greatness! See you later Doug! God Bless you n Stacy…🙏❤😀🌷🌻💪❤🌷💪🙏🌻🌷

Love Dr Leo. If you get stung, chew some plantain and put on sting for a few minutes. Takes the pain away.

  • John T

Is there a link to the article Dr. Leo mentions about hive contamination? (NM)

Changed my search terms and tried again. This seems to be the article referenced:

Dr. Leo: Describes why the small width frame is better
Also Dr. Leo: Tosses old frame on the ground where it belongs
LOL, this man knows what’s good and bad. Wonderful information, thank you for seeking him out as a mentor and guide, and for sharing some of his expertise somewhere it can be easily accessed.

  • Joyce Obeys

I seen where someone put organic confectioners sugar on the bees so they clean one another to keep the mites off of them.

  • Nefarsus

Here I am 3 hours deep, down a beekeeping rabbit hole. Don’t know how I got here, but I am going to try doing this in the coming Spring. Loving the videos with Dr. Leo.

  • umamibear

I can’t thank you guys enough for taking me on this journey… I’m learning so much. Standing ovation for you both.
